Incursion Overview
This illustration and rhyme incursion immerses Stage 3 students in the creative process of writing and illustrating an original adventure story using rhyme. Guided by author and illustrator Elaine Butler, students are introduced to The Curious Adventures of Parker the Dog picture book series and explore how rhythm, character voice and visual storytelling work together in published children’s books.
Working in small story-making teams, students collaboratively develop a shared adventure storyline. Each student writes and illustrates their own four-page spread, designed to connect seamlessly with their group’s overall narrative. These individual spreads are then combined to create a complete, team-made picture book, reinforcing collaboration, sequencing and creative ownership.
The session concludes with structured sharing and reflection, giving students the opportunity to present their work, explain creative choices and reflect on the collaborative storytelling process. Optional take-home or class-printed book formats can be arranged by the school.
This workshop is part of our Primary School Creative Arts Incursions, designed for NSW schools and aligned with the Creative Arts syllabus.
