Incursion Overview

This colour theory art incursion invites students to become Colour Restoring Artists on a creative mission inspired by the picture book Where Has All the Colour Gone?. Guided by author and illustrator Elaine Butler, students explore how colour is created, mixed and used to communicate mood, meaning and story in both art and books.

Working in small groups, students experiment with colour mixing to restore a shared, limited palette. They then use only these collaboratively created colours to produce their own individual artwork on a prepared art surface, encouraging creative decision-making and thoughtful use of colour.

As part of the author–artist experience, students also invent an original character who belongs in this colourless world, considering who the character is and how colour helps bring them to life. The session concludes with students completing a finished artwork and gaining a deeper understanding of how artists and authors use colour to tell stories.

This workshop is part of our Primary School Creative Arts Incursions, designed for NSW schools and aligned with the Creative Arts syllabus.

Location & Availability

  • This Colour theory art incursion is available to schools in North-West Sydney, Blacktown and Parramatta areas, and the Lithgow–Bathurst region.
    If you’re located outside these areas, please get in touch — happy to discuss options where possible.
  • Elaine travels to schools and delivers all incursions on-site during the school day.
    Multiple sessions can be scheduled on the same day, subject to availability.
