Incursion Overview

This alien art incursion invites students to step into an imaginative outer-space world where art, storytelling and curiosity collide. Guided by author and illustrator Elaine Butler, students are introduced to her picture book How Can We Get Home? from The Curious Adventures of Parker the Dog series, using the story as a springboard for character creation and visual storytelling.

Working in small Galactic Groups, students explore different planets or moons and use real scientific details—such as temperature, surface features and atmosphere—to inspire their own original alien character. Using a mixed-media collage approach on art board, each student designs an alien that reflects both its imagined environment and its personality.

The session concludes with students sharing their alien’s name, traits and design choices, building confidence, observation skills and creative thinking through discussion and visual interpretation.

This workshop is part of our Primary School Creative Arts Incursions, designed for NSW schools and aligned with the Creative Arts syllabus.
